About YUKI NYHAN
From the start, porcelain was the clay body I was most attracted to. Its smoothness and possible translucency lends itself to echo the elegant forms which we find in nature. Drawn to the idea of creating pottery that evoke the moments of quiet and calm that I feel in the making, I am mindful of the cycles of nature when I am decorating my pieces. Images of icy waters flowing in the spring or the blossoming of seasonal plants inspire my work. I like to push the clay to its limits by altering, carving and piercing the thrown forms.
Although most of my work is reduction fired in my studio, I occasionally participate in a wood firing. I find the process enhances the organic nature of the forms and adds a depth and character that cannot be achieved in a standard reduction kiln. It is an opportunity for me to let go of the tightly controlled glazing process and let the flame and ash take over.
